Home storage hacks

No matter the size of your home, there’s always a clever way to optimise your storage solutions, whether it’s in your bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, laundry or garden shed. Here are some simple hacks to inspire your storage makeover.

Bedroom

It can be difficult to increase bedroom storage, especially if the room is small or you don’t already have built-in wardrobes – and even if you do, sometimes that's just not enough. Consider these storage ideas:

  • One of the most effective ways to increase storage in your bedroom is underneath the bed. Some bed manufacturers create frames with built-in drawers and storage space under the mattress, as well as storage in the headboard. Likewise, baseless beds are also perfect to store away items you don’t use regularly so make the most of this space with clear plastic storage tubs or vacuum bags to keep everything neat, tidy and well-organised.
  • If you’re in need of extra shelf space for books and decorative pieces, consider installing some floating shelves along the perimeter of your bedroom walls. This idea also works for clothes – if you need more wardrobe space then floating, wall-mounted clothing rails might be an option for you.
  • Utilising the space behind your bedroom door is another great way to save floor space – store dirty clothes in a hanging material hamper or install a rack for shoes, belts or bags (pegs and hooks work well too).
  • When it comes to bedside tables, it’s important to have drawers, shelves or a combination of both to optimise the space and storage in your bedroom. While there might be a lot of bedside table options at your local furniture store, there are also some great DIY options which will seriously boost your bedroom’s storage potential. For example, get inspired online with stackable containers, vintage suitcases, floating nightstand options and old wooden crates you can revamp into something new, stylish and functional.

Bathroom

Maximising storage in any bathroom can be a challenge but it’s not hard to get more space if you think creatively. Consider these storage ideas:

  • Behind the bathroom door is a perfect spot to hang a bathrobe or towels. Likewise, the space above the door is often overlooked, but is actually a perfect spot to install a shelf to hold clean towels.
  • If you have some space below your vanity then try some decorative baskets to add more storage and prevent clutter. Use them for toiletries, cleaning products, or bath and hand towels.
  • Bathroom wall space is precious so it is important to install hooks and rails wherever practical and functional. Also, consider floating shelves – they can be a stylish touch to any bathroom while providing additional space for folded towels, a plant, toiletries and decorative pieces.
  • When it comes to vanity space and storage, a glass shelf under your mirror to hold your toiletries can be stylish and functional. If you don’t want to drill any holes then try suction bathroom storage containers – they work just as well, don’t take up any vanity space and don’t leave any damage.

Kitchen

Kitchens come in all shapes and sizes but more often than not the storage options are far from aplenty. Consider these storage ideas:

  • Boost storage in kitchen drawers by using dividers for cutlery and utensils. You can even find dividers to sort tupperware lids. What’s more, you can buy adjustable dividers to fit your desired size, which will not only keep things tidy and organised, but help you fit more in too.
  • Turn one cupboard shelf into two with wire shelf risers, which help to give you twice the space for crockery, tupperware as well as pots and pans.
  • Storing pots and pans in your cupboard can often be messy (and noisy) so try stacking them sideways with dividers.
  • No matter the size, a pantry can easily get full and cluttered so opt for see-through stackable tupperware containers with labels to keep food organised and fresh. If you can, hang a rack from your pantry door to organise herbs and spices.
  • Racks are also helpful to hang on the inside any cupboard door, whether it’s under the sink to hang cleaning materials, or near the stove to hang pots, pans and utensils.
  • To give yourself more space, install floating shelves to bring utensils, coffee, tea, herbs, spices and oils off the bench and out of the way.

Laundry

Love it or hate it, the laundry is one of the most important rooms in the house, but as a high traffic area it can cause frustration if there’s not enough space to wash and dry clothes, store dirty and freshly laundered items, and act as a storage space for miscellaneous household items. Consider these storage ideas:

  • Fill unused wall space by installing racks to air-dry clothes or hold freshly laundered items before they go in the wardrobe. Depending on how much space you have (and need), you could install two rows of racks, one closer to the ceiling and another underneath, around waist high.
  • Maximise wall space and install a pegboard against a blank wall, even behind a door, and hang cleaning items like brushes, feather dusters, or even the dog’s leash. Another way to put empty wall space into good use and create more storage is with floating shelves.
  • Depending on your laundry layout, give yourself a functional work space by installing a countertop above your washing machine and dryer – it’s a great way to give you more room to sort and fold.
  • Utilise the space behind doors to hang items such as ironing boards, brooms, mops and more. All you need are racks, hooks or pegs.

Garden shed

Sheds are a useful addition to any home no matter the size of your garden, but they can easily become overcrowded with household mess and clutter. With many of us spending more time at home, now’s the time to head outside and give your shed a makeover. A well-organised shed can make a gardener's life a whole lot easier. Consider these storage ideas:

  • Start your shed overhaul by sorting items into categories and groups. If items are stored together based on their purpose, i.e. weeding, then everything will be easier to find and store when you need it. Sorting items by size can be just as effective.
  • Just like rooms inside the house, empty walls should be put to good use if you lack storage space. Utilising shed walls is especially beneficial as it gets items off the floor and makes the space cleaner and less hazardous. Consider some floating shelves on the wall or a pegboard which can be one of the most effective ways to store garden tools. Pegboards can be installed to cover a small or large space depending on your needs. A small pegboard next to or behind the shed door can be particularly useful to give you quick access to frequently used tools. Alternatively, put a pegboard over an entire wall and hang absolutely everything from large to small.
  • Clear storage boxes can come in handy in the shed. Like kitchen tupperware, they can be stacked and labelled so everything is easy to store and find when you need it. Opt for clear containers to make life even easier.
  • Tool racks are a great way to store all of your long tools together while keeping your shed tidy and functional. They can be especially helpful with a magnet attached to keep metal tools and paint brushes in place.
  • If you’re lacking space in your shed but need a flat space to work and store items temporarily, then opt for a fold-down bench. They’re easy to install and you can bring it up and click it into place within seconds, then put it down and it takes up no space at all.
